The Development of Muhammadiyah School in Surakarta in 19201970
Abstract
Abstract This study aims to: a) describe the dynamics of Islam in Surakarta ahead of the rising sun of Muhammadiyah this the city, b) describe “gerak langkah” Muhammadiyah schools in Surakarta in the period 1920-1970, and c) analyze the style of development of the Muhammadiyah Surakarta education. By using the socio-historical method this research succeeded in finding the following points. First, when the Muhammadiyah appeared in Surakarta, the modernization movement of Islam had engulfed the city; the Kauman axis founded the Mambaul Ulum Kasunanan madrasa in 1905 and the axis of merchant Laweyan founded the Sarekat Dagang Islam (SDI) in 1911, the presence of Muhammadiyah gave color to reformist-leaning modernism. Secondly, broadly the movement of the Muhammadiyah school in Surakarta during the period 1920-1970 can be divided into three periods, namely: pioneering 1920-1942, searching for identity from 1942 to 1957, and development 1957-1970. Finally, the style of development of Muhammadiyah education in Surakarta is similar to the pattern of Yogya which has more established school than madrasa. Keywords: Muhammadiyah education, school development, SATV, Surakarta Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: a) menggambarkan dinamika Islam di Surakarta menjelang terbitnya matahari Muhammadiyah di kota bengawan, b) mendeskripsikan gerak langkah sekolah Muhammadiyah di Surakarta pada kurun 1920-1970, dan c) menganalisis corak pengembangan pendidikan Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Dengan menggunakan metode sosio-historis penelitian ini berhasil menemukan hal-hal berikut. Pertama, ketika Muhammadiyah muncul di Surakarta, gerakan modernisasi Islam telah melanda kota ini; poros Kauman mendirikan madrasah Mambaul Ulum Kasunanan pada 1905 dan poros saudagar Laweyan mendirikan Sarekat Dagang Islam (SDI) pada 1911, kehadiran Muhammadiyah memberi warna pada modernisme yang berhaluan reformis. Kedua, secara garis besar gerak langkah sekolah Muhammadiyah di Surakarta selama kurun 1920-1970 dapat dipilah menjadi tiga periode, yaitu: perintisan 1920-1942, pencarian identitas 1942-1957, dan pemekaran 1957-1970. Terakhir, corak pengembangan pendidikan Muhammadiyah di Surakarta mirip pola Yogya yang lebih banyak mendirikan sekolah dari pada madrasah.
