Linguistic expression of appreciation and judgment in Vietnamese and English newspaper articles of social issues

Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing the use of language expressing Appreciation and Judgment in Vietnamese and English newspaper articles of social issues. In the light of Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005), the study reveals that Judgment and Appreciation expressions are realized in two and three sub-types respectively; all these expressions can be explicit or implicit with different word classes and scale. The study makes use of both qualitative and quantitative information employing descriptive method. On the basis of the findings, the article puts forward several implications and suggestions on reading comprehension, writing, translating the language of Judgment, Appreciation as well as learning and teaching English through language of Judgment and Appreciation in particular and Appraisal language in general.
