Linguistic expression of graduation in Vietnamese and English newspaper articles of social issues

Abstract

This paper reports on the use of language expressing Graduation in Vietnamese and English newspaper articles of social issues. The study makes use of both qualitative and quantitative information employing descriptive method. 50 Vietnamese opinion article and 50 English ones are collected from reliable online newspapers. Drawing on Appraisal Theory (Martin & White, 2005), the study reveals that Graduation operates across two axes of scalability – Focus and Force. Its expressions are realized with lexicogrammatical resources. On the basis of the findings, the article puts forward several implications and suggestions on reading comprehension, writing, translating the language of Graduation as well as learning and teaching English through language of Graduation in particular and Appraisal language in general.
