Exploring fators affecting travel mode choice of citizens in Da Nang city

Abstract

Due to the development of private vehicles, urban transport problems, such as traffic congestion, traffic accidents or air pollution, are getting more and more common and serious. This affects the life quality of urban people. This study aims to find factors affecting the travel mode choice of people living in urban areas where motorcycles have been dominating traffic system. With the data collected from 848 people living in Da Nang, a multinomial logit model (MLM) is developed to explore variables affecting the mode choice for ordinal trips of citizens. Key findings of the research show that individual variables such as age, income have a significant impact on their mode choice decision. The purpose of trips like picking children or entertainment, the complexity of trips (the number of temporary stops) and factor of motor owning have a strong positive effect on the choice of motorcycles as a means of ordinary traveling. Furthermore, it is also found that the distance has a positive impact on the decision of using bus for travelling.
