Learn about French colonial architecture in Laos
Abstract
Indochina Union (1887), including Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Guangzhou were all under French colonial rule. Laos has 2,340km of common border with Vietnam. Under the political line of Indochina Governor-General Albert Sarraut, the buildings in Laos had similarities with Vietnamese architecture in this period. This paper will conduct an overview study to understand the characteristics of French colonial architecture in Laos and make an assessment of architecture and urban planning in Laos during the colonial period. Finally, the article compares the similarities and differences between French colonial architecture in Laos and in Vietnam.
