The influence of decrease in chloride diffusion coefficient on the service life of concrete structures based on probability analysis
Abstract
At present there are many models used to calculate the service life of reinforced concrete structures in chloride-containing environments. All these models are based on Fick’s second law of diffusion, in which an important parameter showing concrete resistance to chloride penetration from the external environment is the chloride diffusion coefficient D(t). Most of the service life calculation models assume that the D(t) coefficient decreases over time; however, the decrease in D(t) over time is inconsistent through the models. This article analyses the influence of the decrease of the D(t) coefficient over time on the probability of reinforcement corrosion failure based on Monte Carlo simulation. The influence of concrete cover thickness on the probability of reinforcement corrosion failure is also taken into consideration.
