Aging population and living arrangements of the elderly: An empirical evidence of Vietnam

Abstract

This paper employs the data from Vietnam Household Living Standards Survey, supplied by the General Statistics Office, to examine the tendencies and changes in family living arrangement of the elderly in Vietnam. Our findings prove that the family living arrangement of the elderly has changed a lot. Specifically, the proportion of older people living with their children decreased significantly while the rate of living with their spouse or living alone has tended to increase. Differences in the elderly’s living arrangement organization are also recorded between men and women as well as between rural and urban areas. This paper is to support with empirical evidence for the fact that the elderly’s living arrangement has changed over time.
