Mini-review: Diversity of Bacillus thuringiensis strains and potential of application for killing cancer cell in Vietnam
Abstract
- Bacillus thuringiensis strains have been studied and applied in diverse fields, especially in agriculture. In the past 20 years, there have been many studies on the ability of killing cancer cells of the Bacillus thuringiensis thanks to its Parasporin proteins. The Bacillus thuringiensis and related bacterial parasporal proteins are non-hemolytic and non-insecticide, yet capable of preferentially killing cancer cells. The natural condition of Vietnam contains rich Bacillus thuringiensis genes with more than 3500 local strains being isolated. Four Vietnamese Bacillus thuringiensis strains are known to produce Parasporin, accounting for 21% globally recognized strains (19 in total). These figures implies that isolation of Bacillus thuringiensis in Vietnam for cancer cell treatment is very promising. On this basis, it necessitates expanding and establishing more research sites in the whole country to increase the chance to find new Bacillus thuringiensis Parasporin producer strains capable of killing cancer cells.
