DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING SENTENCES IN SHORT PARAGRAPH THROUGH GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE OF SMA NEGERI 1 SIROMBU

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to develope students’ ability in writing sentences in short paragraph. In developing the students’ ability in writing sentences in short paragraph, the researcher uses Grammar Translation Method. The subject of the research is the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sirombu that the total number of the students is 40 person. This research is applied in two cycles. The procedures of each meeting consists of planning, action, reflection, and observation paper. Based on the result of each cycles, the researcher finds that the students get development in their writing in short paragraph by applying the steps of Grammar Translation Method. The improvment rises in the first meeting to the second meeting of Cycle I; In the first meeting there are 74,92% students active, and 51,13% students creative. The score of the students are 17 persons (42,50%) in less level, 15 students (37,50%) in the adequate level, 8 students (20,00%) in the good level, and no one student in the very good level. The average mark is 57,25%. In the second meeting there are 78,96 students active, 60,15% students creative. The score of students are 10 students (25%) in the less level, 11 students (27,50%) in the adequate level, 19 students (47,50%) in the good level, and no one students in the very good level. The average mark is 65,50%).In cycle II, in the first meeting there are 85,12% students active, and 75,83% students creative. The score of the students are no one students in the less level, 9 students (22,50%) in the adequate level, 19 students (47,50%) in the good level, and 12 students (30%) in the very good level. The average mark is 80,5%. In the second meeting, there are 100% students active, and 82,75% students creative. The score of students are no one student in the less level, 4 students (10%) are in the adequate level, 20 students are (50%) in the good level, and 16 students are (40%) in the very good level. The average mark is 82,75%.
