Technology for charging and energy storage onboard electric scooters

Abstract

Low energy density of the battery and long charging time are the main barriers to the widespread application of electric scooters today. Thanks to the development of advanced materials for electrodes and solid-state electrolyte, the storage capacity of lithium-based batteries is expected to be double with low cost in the next decade. Fast charging technology is also ready thanks to the combination of appropriate material for the battery electrodes, optimal charging temperature control and improving the capacity of DC charging stations. When the new generation battery is not popular and the fast charging infrastructure is not available, the swap battery technology is an appropriate energy storage solution for electric scooters. Management of the swap battery system can be fully automated with IoT technology. Thanks to these advances, electric scooters will be real potential candidate substituting internal combustion engine scooter in the near future.
