Islamic Education Based on Theocentric Humanism

Abstract

In colonial era, education was something that was very difficult to access, especially for the indigenous people. Hence, some Islamic figures emerged for establishing Islamic educational institutions independently with their community. In Lombok, Tuan Guru Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid was the founding figure of two modern madrasas in colonial era; Nahdlatul Wathan Diniyyah Islamiyah (NWDI) and Nahdaltul Banat Diniyyah Islamiyah (NBDI). These Islamic education institutions are the first madrasa in Lombok using class system and established Islamic education learning curriculum. Hence, this article tries to discuss Tuan Guru Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid’s Islamic educational thoughts. By using hermeneutical approach, this article will explain: first, how the construction of Islamic education thought Tuan Guru Zainuddin Abdul Madjid. Second, how Tuan Guru Zainuddin Abdul Madjid's theocentric humanism forms in Islamic education.
