Civil society is the political ideals of Islam, that is to create a civilized society and independent. This study as a purpose to determine the relevance of the concept civil society Nurcholish Madjid and condition of Indonesian society contemporary.The result of this research indicates that concept of civil society Nurcholish is a virtuous society or public morality (civilized society). There are three formulas civil society of Nurcholish, that is: democracy, civil society (civil society), and civility (civility). Civil society of Nurcholish has characteristics: egalitarianism, openness, rule of law and justice, tolerance and diversity, as well as the deliberations. Rationale Nurcholish on civil society, that is: the Koran and the Hadith, the classical Islamic history (time of the Prophet), the principle of democracy, and the figures that influence it. By paying attention to the potential of the Indonesian people, especially the noble values derived from religious teachings, and given the Indonesian society is a religious, then according to Nurcholish Indonesian people have all the equipment and the potential to enforce the civil society (civil society). Idea of Nurcholish to realize civil society in Indonesia is very relevant to Indonesia today, because civil society is the concept of democracy, pluralism, freedom, tolerance, the principle of consultation, egalitarian, and openness, as well as applying the principle of fairness. Ideals of Nurcholish for Indonesia is a democratic process, because democracy is the home for civil society. Nurcholish aspires open democratic process monitoring and balancing dynamics (check and balance) community.
