PERAN TERJEMAH DALAM KEBUDAYAAN DAN PERSOALAN IDENTITAS
Abstract
This paper aims at elaborating the relationship oftranslation, culture, and identity. Translation is one meansof cultural development. It adopts not only from otherelements, but also from other culture to be dialogued andequivalented with the target culture. Within this "taking"and "giving" process the identity of a culture is laid.Historically speaking, translation has proved its great rolein human civilization since Ancient Greek. Throughtranslation the contact between two cultures can benefit oneanother in many ways. This contact involves at least twoprocesses; dialogue of language and of thought. One criticalissue in terms of cultural development, which is foundthrough out history, is that translation involved a nation inthe process.
