Abstract
Pesantren merupakan lembaga pendidikan tertua asli Indonesia.
Pada awalnya pesantren ini memakai sistem pendidikan
tradisional, dari kurikulum, metode, sampai kepada sistem
pendidikannya. Seiring perkembangan zaman pesantren yang
dikenal dengan sistem pembelajaran tradisionalnya, dianggap
tidak mampu lagi menghadapi perkembangan zaman. Untuk
menjawabnya pesantren melakukan perubahan-perubahan yang
dalam skala terbatas untuk menjamin keberlangsungan dan
ketahanan pendidikan yang diselenggarakannya. Perubahan dari
sistem pendidikan salafiah menjadi khalafiyah. Pesantren
khalafiyah (modern) yang mengadopsi sistem madrasah atau
sekolah yang memasukkan pelajaran umum dalam kurikulum
madrasah yang dikembangkan, atau pesantren yang
menyelenggarakan tipe sekolah-sekolah umum.
